Becoming One with Life

I’ve been learning how I am abundant life and this life lives and moves and has its being within me. This life also spreads out to the world around me. It's an intricate web of interconnectedness you could say and it feels like a level of unity that's quite foreign yet familiar with all living things.

In this last week, there has been a surging force bringing a recognition of this cosmic reality and vitality that flows through every aspect of my human existence. It's multidimensional and I'm not separate from it.

I used to feel at odds with life and through deep diving and nights of the soul, I can perceive how life isn't just randomly occurring, instead, it's something I am a part of. It's this cosmic relationship that brings everything front and center in my consciousness.

There's a joy from knowing I am a being of an Abundant Life that grows and changes. For example, I look out my window and see the manifestation of life in everything around me. I can feel the trees, the birds, the grass, and anything else really as it's birthing.

Creation ebbs and flows in rhythm and alignment. I am that life. I am working with and not separated from the energy of creation. It makes me in some ways quite dependent I think. As I embrace this idea of being alive it's helping me to have a larger capacity to evolve. Like my tent pegs are being stretched out.

I constantly feel the pull to be authentic and live from the fullness of my being. Not just show up haphazardly without thinking my actions do not affect anything. Me being life as life is rippling out to all things. There's an accountability to this knowing.

Lots of love,

Ellen Theresa :)

The Polarizing Impact of Evangelical Christianity on Modern Issue

In today’s society, few topics ignite as much debate and division as those surrounding evangelical Christianity. This branch of Christianity, characterized by its emphasis on personal faith and the authority of the Bible, often finds itself at the center of contentious discussions regarding our ever changing society and traditional values. The implications of these divisions are profound, affecting not only individual relationships but also broader dynamics.

One of the most noticeable areas of division is related to environmental issues. While many evangelical Christians see caring for the Earth as a responsibility rooted in their faith, advocating for sustainable practices, I never received that teaching in church. Instead, I often heard messages that seemed to prioritize spiritual growth over environmental stewardship. This lack of emphasis on caring for our planet left me feeling disconnected from a crucial aspect of faith that I believe should have been highlighted.

For example, many sermons I attended focused on the idea of salvation and the promise of eternal life in heaven. The teachings drilled into our minds that our true home is not on Earth but in the afterlife. This perspective taught about the temporary nature of our existence and that the world is destined for destruction. Therefore our primary goal should be to prepare for departure. These messages only downplayed the importance of the environment, leading to a mindset that viewed Earth as merely a stop gap rather than something to be cherished and tended to. For those who felt a moral obligation to protect the environment as part of their faith, were labeled earth worshipers and an enemy of God.

Another environmental issue is around regulation. This is viewed as an infringement on personal freedoms and progress. All that happens within this perspective, is an infusion of tension within the church and the broader community. I’ve sat in church debates over local policies aimed at reducing waste or protecting natural habitats, with people on different sides of the issue unable to find common ground. It’s can be challenging to witness how divisive beliefs about our responsibility to care for Mother earth creates inroads of conflicting actions and policies. In the end all this does is hinder our collective ability to protect the environment for future generations.

Sexuality is another deeply sensitive topic to Christianity, particularly in the United States. As a lesbian, I have felt the weight of discrimination within the church, where evangelical teachings often upheld traditional views on marriage and sexual relationships. This perspective unintentionally pushed aside those of us who identified as LGBTQ+, making us feel isolated and unaccepted.

While there are some members of the evangelical community who strive to embrace inclusion, others cling firmly to outdated doctrines, creating a rift that can be painful. This tension affects everyone and can tear apart families and friendships, as loved ones find themselves on opposite sides of a deeply personal issue. Within my own relationships there has been a struggle to reconcile love for one another leading to heart wrenching conversations and, at times, estrangement. These confclicts remind us of how important it is to approach these topics with compassion, humility and understanding, recognizing the humanity in each other, regardless of beliefs.

The intersection of faith and politics deepens societal divisions. Many evangelicals align with conservative ideologies, promoting traditional policies that can alienate those who see their faith as a call for social justice and progressive change. This polarization is evident in debates on immigration, healthcare, and education, where differing interpretations of Christian values often result in harsh criticism of opposing views. As well, the rise of Christian Nationalism complicates matters by merging religious and national identities, by sidelining those who advocate for a more compassionate approach to social issues.

Family upbringing in evangelical circles often fuels polarization too, around gender roles, parenting, marriage etc. Younger generations may challenge these norms, seeking a more free and personal approach to faith and family life creating misunderstanding of it means to live faithfully. Additionally, purity culture, which is still alive and well, promotes abstinence until marriage, leading to damaging experiences that lead to feelings of shame and inadequacy. For those who have had premarital relationships may feel ostracized or judged, resulting in deep seated shame. This pressure manifests in anxiety and fear of failure, complicating the dating arena with unhealthy relationships. As young people navigate these complexities, the clash of experiences and expectations can polarize their views on faith and relationships.

Bridging the Divide

While this article highlights some examples of how Evangelical Christianity can create polarization, many more exist. As our society continues to change, it is essential for those within the evangelical community to actively engage in open and humble conversations to seek common ground.

Let us prioritize understanding instead of demonizing those who seek a more progressive approach. Viewing and discerning each other as mirrors can increase our compassion and care. When we see each other on an even playing field, this bridges the divides that have formed. Faith then becomes inclusive and accepting which gives space for everyone to address contemporary issues in an attitude of peace. This can create positive ripples in the earth for generations to come.
